The rest of the trip is just riding for home and trying to stay off the interstates as much as we can. Altohugh we did have an invite to go tubing on the river and drink some beer with some young folks in Wes Point, NE. It sounded like fun, but we did not take them up on the offer.
If you would like to see the rest of the picture, just click on the gallery under links at the right. Then go to page two and click on Wyoming trip picture. When viewing an album you can select side bar then view slide show. Set the time to view and the size.

Hope you enjoy this Frank, Doug, Bill and I sure did. Although Doug and bill left us in southern Wyoming.
Today was a great day in South Dakota, a fantastic day to ride the wildlife loop in Custer State Park.
Once the loop is completed take a right on 16 for a couple of miles then north on 16a towards Mt. Rushmore. This Iron Mountain Road is twisty. There on up to view Mt. Rushmore. At the end of the day we road through the Badlands National Park. If you get the chance do this. The Lakota knew the place as mako sica. The early French trappers called the area les mauvaises terres a traverser. Both mean Bad Lands. Writer Freeman Tildn described the region as peaks and valleys of delicately banded colors-colors that shift in the sunshine.
We pulled into the Super 8 motel about about 5:00 and lucked out with the last room, but it was booked for the second night. I ask the girl that checked us in if she new Roger Wright. I worked and road bikes with Roger in Boulder, CO. He transfered to Rochester, Minnasota about the time I transfered to Lexington, KY. After his retirement he moved to Custer. I visited with him for a while when he came to work at 11:00 and then again in the morning before he got off at 7:00.
We left Custer and road the wildlife loop in Custer State Park, then took the Iron Mountain Road up to Mt. Rushmore. Then on to Deadwood then Sturgis. From Sturgis we took I 90 east Wall turned south on 240 for the badlands loop, coming back to I 90 east and spent the night at Kaduka, SD.
The next morning we road on to Murdo and turned south on 83. We are now on our way home, but will try not to ride Interstates, thus 83 south, then southeast on 20 just south of Valentine. We then jumped on 275 continuing on southeast to West Point. At MickyD’s we sat with a local and ask directions east without taking I 80. We are now staying at the Super 8 next to I 29. Tomorrow we will run down I 29 a few miles to St. Joseph the east on 36.
I will put some maps of our trip here, after I get home, it’s kinda a pain to do it on my laptop.
We met Tom (a friend from Cheyenne that ran up on his Ultra Classic) at the Sundowner motel in Riverton, and were going to dinner in Hudson about 6 miles form Riverton (a great steak place), but they were closed on Sunday, so we ate at the Sundowner. Tom and I have been friends since grade school. Pat and I have been to all 4 of his weddings 3 of them to the same person I told him this was the last time so he had to make it last.
Monday Doug, Bill, Frank, Tom, a guy from NY finger lakes and I road to Lander where Bill and NY left us going further west. the rest of us went down 287 to Rawlins, then had lunch at Saratoga, Wy. Doug left us after lunch heading to Steamboat Springs, Co. to meet Marniee.
Tom, Frank and I continued over the Snowies to Laramie then Happy Jack road to Cheyenne.
Frank and I stayed at Tom & Trudy’s home for a couple of nights, went to Cheyenne Frontier Days, Daddy of them all. Our next stop was Custer SD.
We left Lexington on Friday afternoon, Pat took the car so the girls could ride in comfort and come back home after the Saturday scrollsaw convention in Wilimgton, OH. Frank and I rode the bikes, because we were leaving from there for our two + weeks to Colorado, Wyoming etc.
Here are a couple of scrollsaw pics, this one is for Milt.
We left Sunday morning for Lebanon, MO 565 miles. Spent Sunday evening at my Dad’s left Monday morning for Dodge City, Ks. I am sending this from the Motel 8 there. Here are a few more pics of DC.

This last picture was taken at a gas stop in Il, before we got to St. Louis.
July 16th.
Frank and I went to the Garden of the Gods and then rode up Pikes Peak 14,110 ft. I will add some of the pictures later.
July 17th
We left Milt’s about 8:00 am heading west. See map.

Woodland Park north there was a very large fire for miles and miles along 67. I think Frank really liked the mountains. Here are a couple more pics.

Laramie has changed since Doug went to the UW in late 60’s. Ed decided he did not want to stay so he went on. Doug, Frank, Bill and myself will continue on to Gilette tomorrow.
July 18th
Left Laramie about 7:45 going north on HY 30 to 34 east to I25 then north to Douglas and 59 north to Gillette.
It was a beautiful day 53 to 68 Deg’s, very little traffic so we made it by 11:30, 250 miles.
Today was a good day, we went over to the new Wood Craft store in Lexington their opening day. Then stopped by Mike Chinguee’s home and picked up some great walnut wood Mike can’t turn it because he is allergic to it bad for him but good for me. We then went out to Jamie Donaldson’s and picked up some Ambrosia Maple and also cut a couple of blanks from the walnut.
Plans for tomorrow
- make dust collector for lathe
- turn feet for sub woofer
- rough out some walnut and maple bowls
That should be a full day.
